Happy Birthday, Wolfenstein 3D!

Wolfenstein 3D is 17 years old today!

(It’s also Adrian Carmack’s birthday, the brilliant artist on that game.)

Joe Siegler over at 3D Realms has a nice post about Wolf3D.

It’s also Cinco de Mayo!

  1. In one of the help screens in the shareware version of version 1.4 of Wolfenstein 3D Adrian Carmack said: “Okay, now for the CGA version . . . NOT!”

To celebrate these events I’ve created a prototype of what Wolfenstein 3D could look like on a CGA card. I’ve put the demo on my website:

  2. My first thought was that you simply edited all the textures and such to use those sickly old shades of cyan and magenta (there’s a hack of Keen 1 out there that does much the same thing), but I guess if you used Mr. Silverman’s code, then it’s genuine CGA?

Nice site, by the way; I haven’t visited it in a while and didn’t know you were still adding so much niftiness.

Tom, just wanted to thank you for your creative work in Wolf3d. I recently got back into Wolf3d last year and made my first mod. Won an award for it from the Wolf community! My earliest memories of great gaming come from playing Wolf3d and toying with the original mapeditor back in the day! All the user created work and programs today just blow me away!. Hard to believe Wolf3d is this old now! Anyhoo, if you want to check out my Wolf3d mod you can find the link on my website: jayngoware.com

    Thanks again Tom!!

Frenkel: Cool will have to check it out sometime soon.

Jayngo: Aw thanks, glad you have fun…. kinda crazy busy right now, but will try to check it out soon….

  5. Jorpho: I’ve seen that Keen mod. But my demo is genuine CGA, as far as I know :) . I’ve put the source code on my website, so you can check it out yourself.
